PHS EXCURSION 2023 WINKELMOLEN TREE FARM
On a very warm July evening, several members ventured out for our excursion to the Winkelmolen Tree Nursery in Lynden. It is located on over 750 acres of land and with 460 different species of trees. They specialize in high quality natives and ornamental shade trees. Their products are shipped to Alberta to Newfoundland and to the northern United States. Jeff Winkelmolen did an excellent commentary and willingly answered our questions, while one of his 45 immigrant workers drove the tractor around the farm. Some of his immigrant workers have been returning to work for 20 - 25 yeas, mostly from Mexico or Vietnam. There are also about 20 students and local workers. It was warm and it got a little uncomfortable sitting on a hay bale but it was so interesting.
Our thanks to Edith Stone for organizing the event and to Nancy Slusarczyk and Brenda Simpson for our tasty and refreshing treats. Thank you Jeff, you were an excellent guide.
Elm trees in 40'C and 100% humidity. Making roots after 2-3 days.
Jeff Winkelmolen patiently answers our many questions. These will be peach trees in 2-3 years.
We were happy to see these stairs being dragged into position.
"All aboard" and we are off.
Every acre was organized and tidy. This is necessary when it comes time to gather an order together and get it shipped.
Jeff's commentary was interesting and the vistas were beautiful.
After the tour it was time to socialize, enjoy our snacks and get to know more members.
